Two days in town, two days on the reef

Our Open Water course is four days, small groups, and the same instructor from the first pool session to your last dive at Norman Reef. You'll finish certified to dive to 18 metres anywhere in the world.

Open Water course · $895

How the four days go

Courses start every Monday and Thursday. Max four students per instructor, and the price includes all your gear, both reef days, lunch, the reef tax and your certification.

DAY 1 · THE SHOP

Theory & the pool

Morning upstairs with the videos and a coffee, afternoon in the pool getting comfortable breathing underwater.

DAY 2 · THE POOL

Skills

Clearing your mask, sharing air, buoyancy. Then a short quiz upstairs and a fitting for your gear under the house.

DAY 3 · MABEL

Ocean dives 1 & 2

Out to the reef with everyone else. Two training dives, then a snorkel or a nap on the top deck.

DAY 4 · MABEL

Dives 3 & 4

Your last two training dives and you're certified. Kat stamps your logbook on the way home.

Do the theory online first and you can skip day one. We send the link when you book, so you can do it on the plane.
The dive medical comes first. You'll fill it in on your phone when you book. If you answer yes to anything you'll need a doctor's sign-off before the pool. There are dive doctors in Cairns, and we'll help you find one.

Who teaches you

Moose and Kenji

Moose has taught a few thousand people to dive since he left the mines in Mount Isa. He's patient, very tall, and will tell you a terrible joke at the safety stop.

Kenji grew up in Okinawa diving with his dad and teaches in English and Japanese. 日本語でのコースも大丈夫です。

Every instructor on Mabel holds a current instructor rating, first aid and oxygen ticket. We check them every season, not just when they start.
